Oracle: Symbolic Interpretations in the Spirit of Nuinn, Morris, Jung, and Marx
My interest in divination comes from the “seeking magic” of Philip Carr-Gomm’s DruidCraft (which itself draws from the Tarot), the I Ching and Jung’s introduction to it, and to a lesser extent the Ogham via The Druid Path by John Michael Greer.
This passive, academic, interest came too with a great deal of skepticism and disinterest in superstition. The Oracle therefore aspires to be both practical, encouraging Marx’s philosophy and Jung’s psychology, and also inspirational, in the heartwarming poetry and social conscience of Nuinn and of William Morris. Meditating, opening the mind to mystery and attuning to nature through ritual, letting the Oracle encourage fresh perspectives, has already proved useful.
Divination is seeking knowledge of the future or the unknown. The Oracle is an aide in this process. Given the proliferation of fraudsters and quacks, an upfront exposition of the method of divination, and the design that facilitates it, is important - even at the expense of mystery.
The essential mechanics of an oracle are the prompt, a medium, and a response; a seeker must present a question or phenomena, and there must be some medium to engage with and provide output. First and foremost to the process is intuition. There must be a central human element, both in generating and interpreting the response. The second element is randomness; ensuring engagement with a fresh perspective, and tempering the conscious with the spontaneous.
The casting of yarrow stalks and the obfuscated interpretation of the I Ching embodies this perfectly, though it is far from practical; some toss coins in the same way. Generating a string of 3 octodecimal digits to address a reading of archetypes is a very digital, if simple, obfuscation at the heart of the Wynn Rook Oracle. Owing to its relative simplicity, the oracle especially should be used alongside other ritual, meditation, journaling, etc.
Cognition, Logic, Consciousness
